Breaking into the fashion business is easier when you are a fashion designer, but breaking into the fashion world as a stylist is a challenge. Unless you have a celebrity friend, it is very hard to become a stylist and it is one of those professions that is really hard to succeed in, because of how many aspiring stylists exists. As long as you have great taste and an eye for uniqueness, you can call yourself a stylist, but it is hard to get your name out to Hollywood.

According to June Ambrose in the interview above, an aspiring stylist needs to have an understanding of the physical and mental logistics of the business. The job is beyond just making someone look pretty. It is making someone feel pretty and look past their insecurities. June advises aspiring stylists to pick a field to focus on whether it is editorial or television. She also suggests getting an internship with a stylist you have respect for that you will actually learn from.

June Ambrose is a famous celebrity stylist who has worked with some high profile clients like Will Smith, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and the list goes on.\

In December of 2009, the London Times revealed that becoming a stylist is one of the top ranked professions among young women. One a person sets their mark in the fashion industry like Monica Rose or Rachel Zoe, they can charge anywhere from $1,500 to $15,000 a day for styling celebrities for ceremonies like the Oscars. Finding the perfect dress for the client for a big event isn’t a one day job either.

Mason Spotlight

One of the latest trends in fashion has been combining two light washed out denim. This trend has been seen everywhere from the runway to the George Mason University campus. Meet Jennifer Garcia. Jennifer is a Public Relations student at GMU. Combining the two denim colors, she is obviously one of the most fashionable ladies of GMU.  When asked to describe her style, she said “My style, I would say is determined on how I feel and wake up in the morning.”

The washed out denim trend has been recommended by stylist Brad Goreski. Brad is celebrity stylist who has clients from the US to Canada. Check out his video on top 5 must-haves at http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/rachel-zoe-celebrity-stylist-brad-goreski-started/story?id=16770577#.ULetnqPy2So.

DIY AND BOW TIE

Ever since I discovered www.pinterest.com, my wardrobe has changed dramatically. All those old shirts that I only wore to bed have become one of the key items in my closet. Being a college student and paying your parents’ full rent really forces you to get creative.

The picture above was actually done for the GMU Fashion Society. We hosted a DIY event where participants were asked to bring any piece of old clothing from shoes to shirts and we would give them ideas to update that item. To promote the PR campaign for the GMU Fashion Society, I decided that making something would be a better advertisement then just posters and flyers. That is how the DIY above came about.

The DIY is super easy. All you need is:

-          Old t-shirt

-          Scissors

Tips/Ideas:

-          Make sure to hand wash your new shirt.

-          If you would like to tie dye before cutting out the diamonds, it will create a cool pattern.

-          Apply studs along the collar for a bolder fashion statement.

-          Wear it over button up shirts, wear it as a bikini cover up, tuck it inside your skirt, wear it.under a blazer.

-          Make sure to use a shirt that is a size bigger than your normal size.

-          Check out the “About Me” link to see how I styled it.

Celebrity Stylists Root for the Bow Tie Trend

The bow tie for women is a popular trend among fashionistas and celebrity trendsetters alike.

Bow ties were once only considered as the geek’s accessory. Now, wearing bow ties has become the new trend for both men and women. People who love taking risks with their style are in love with this not-so-new trend, but others are apprehensive. Some strictly view bow ties as only for men. With the overlapping fashion trends between men and women’s fashion, this trend is a no-brainer. Pairing a print bow tie with a plain button down shirt has been spotted everywhere.

Monica Rose is a Hollywood stylist who works with the Kardashian clan. In the 2011 Kardashian family Christmas card, the whole family was wearing classic black bow ties. Of course, none other than the talented Monica Rose styled the shoot.

Another celebrity stylist obsessed with this trend is Brad Goreski. He is best known from his feud with the legendary stylist Rachel Zoe. He was first introduced to the world on Bravo’s hit reality show The Rachel Zoe Project. Brad was loved by America with his quirky, fun colored bow ties. Now, he has passed on the trend to his own celebrity clients like Demi Moore and Rashida Jones.

In my last post, I talked about Monica Rose and how I ran into her. Here’s her daughter, Alaia Rose.

Video: Youtube

Monica Rose is one of the top Hollywood stylists and someone I aspire to be. She first started her career styling to E! News’ “Top 10” segment. She was born in laid-back Santa Cruz. She never judged anyone’s style, because she thought all styles were cool. There was not much glam going on around where she was born. In a recent interview with Santa Cruz Magazine, Monica said that her mom has been such an inspiration for her career. “As a kid I sometimes wondered why my mom didn’t dress like a mom, but I remember secretly wishing she would keep everything because I wanted to wear it someday” says Monica in the magazine article coming out soon!

Today, she is well-known as the Kardashian stylist. She is the family’s everyday stylist as well as her own family’s. I first discovered Monica through Instagram. There was an adorable picture of a super stylish little girl named Alaia Rose. I discovered that Monica styles her daughter which has become an obsession with her fans like me. She is such a humble lady who seems to have captivated Hollywood.

Who Else is in Love?

There’s no doubt that fashion is all about taking risks. Although lately, designers may be taking that saying literally, because studs and spikes are taking over! It has gone from the runway to streetwear. Spikes and studs seem extremely dangerous to be worn, but it is the most astounding fashion trend yet. It has become such a statement that the use of spikes and studs has transcended over to home décor or even phone cases! My friend, Diana Caceres, is absolutely obsessed with these and I don’t blame her. She has been redoing her vans with the spikes for a few months now and it is an absolute transformation. “Once you start studding and spiking, you cannot go back! It is absolutely amazing and it’s definitely upgrading my closet” said Diana this past weekend over a cup of Starbucks. It is a great way to upgrade your old clothes. Add a couple to your clothes, your bag, your shoes, your phone case, your jewelry or anywhere you can glue it and you are set to go. Be careful if you are going out though, because some lounges and clubs do not allow clothes with spikes in. If you are interested in purchasing, visit your local Pacsun stores or www.studsandspikes.com.
